New York City officials were outraged over a security reach in the subway system. The New York Daily News reported that illegal copies of master subway keys are falling into the wrong hands. Police, firefighters and authorized MTA workers have the keys to enter the subway through emergency gates. A News reporter obtained a key from a man who said he paid $27 for it. Councilman Peter Vallone from Queens said the MTA and NYPD need to find the perpetrators quickly and put them in jail. Vallone heads the Council’s Public Safety Committee. A spokesman for NYC Transit said it will conduct an “immediate audit” of the keys to determine the seriousness of the problem.
Illegal key copies weren’t the only problem the subway system was facing. State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli warned that fare hikes from the MTA could be steeper and come faster than expected, even as the Agency unveils a new capital construction program that includes makeovers for 40 subway stations, 500 new subway cars and 2,000 new buses.
